Jennifer Kaukeinen,
RN, MS, OCN
Director of Operations
Rochester, New York |
With 40 practice groups
based at Rochester General Hospital, ViaHealth has
watched its annual medical transcription expenses rise
each year, to a high of $600,000 in 2007. Several
months ago, director of operations Jennifer Kaukeinen
and her team began exploring strategies for reducing
that significant cost.
In addition to cutting the transcription costs by more
than 50% during the first year of implementation, use
of speech recognition software has had another benefit
capturing additional revenue.

My
name is Kevin Anstee. I served collectively for nine
years in the United States Army and the United States
Army National Guard. After returning home from Iraq
in 2006 I opted to continue my education after
completing my contract honorably. I have since
received my Associates Degree in Applied
Business/Marketing and it is an honor to have been
hired as an Office Manager by Achieve Results.
Before starting here I had only
heard of speech recognition but I never had the
opportunity to use it. It is mind blowing how much
easier it makes completing any type of document. I
have always been able to type fairly well, but now
that I am using speech recognition, my productivity
has more than doubled.
Although I am a new user, I have nothing but great
things to say about speech recognition. I look
forward to learning even more and continuing to
increase my productivity as I become more proficient. |

A cell phone or a pay
phone?
Earlier
this week I met with Scott Lefebre of Nixon Peabody
LLP. We were reinstalling his speech recognition
software after the installation of his new computer.
It had been several weeks since he had been able to
use his speech recognition software. As we were
reinstalling the software he commented, I did not
realize how much I relied on it.
One
of the many things I find most interesting about the
use of speech recognition software once you've used
it for a while, when you are put in a situation where
you do not have access to it and are forced to type,
wow, the benefits become blatantly obvious.
Stop
for a moment and think about how burdensome,
inconvenient and the amount of physical and mental
effort that is required to type. If you have not yet
come to this realization think about when you
personally transitioned to a cell phone, would you
ever go back to preferring a pay phone?
It is so exciting to be part of this revolutionary
transition from typing to speaking.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts. Your comments
allow for continuous enhancement to the services we
offer our customers. (585)586-4550 x227
My very best,
